The Grand Gift of Storytelling

Have you ever been captivated by an incredible story? Maybe, you’ve found yourself lost in the imagery of a J.R.R Tolkien book? Maybe, you’ve been taken back to some childhood memory while reading a book to your children at bedtime.

We were created for stories. Everyone I know, loves a good story. Often times, as Christians, we miss the point of stories. We miss what they say about the God who created us. We were created for stories. Gods story. We love great stories because we were made in the image of the greatest story teller.

We were created to know Him through his story. Throughout the ages, men of old, have lost their lives trying to preserve the story of the gospel for future generations. Without fail, the triune God has preserved his story in his Word, the Bible.

We tend to approach the Bible as a textbook. Almost as if it was written just to give us facts to pass a test. Truthfully, the Bible was written and preserved by blood drenched hands so that we could know God.

From beginning to end, the story of the Bible is, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. God sets the stage. “In the beginning God…” God himself, pulls us into the creative order, his standard of work and rest and the creativity of our creator. He tells us how we fell and shows us how he will slay the dragon and get his bride.

When we read the Bible, we see a gracious God who preserves a people for himself. We learn of the failures of Abraham and Moses or the grand sins of David. We see a fleeing Jonah and we watch the lineage of Christ form before our eyes.

Unto us, a child was born. His name is Immanuel. He is the son of God. Truly God. Truly man. Christ came to ransom captive Israel. Along the way, He called fishermen and tax collectors to follow him. He stood up against the hypocrisy of heartless followers, The Pharisees. He lived a perfect life. He was betrayed by a kiss. Sentenced as an innocent man while a guilty man went free. He was beaten and ridiculed and led naked through the streets to a cross. He was crucified. There, he felt, the full weight of His fathers wrath against unrighteousness and sin. There, he died. Alone.

Three days later, the Christ man, rose. Grabbing the keys to death. Defeating the devil and conquering sin. He accomplished all that was set before him. In his sacrifice, the gates of Heaven and the hand of Christ have been opened to us, by repentance and childlike faith. Christ, has made it possible to know who our Father is. He has given hope for the rejected and downcast.

Christian, you were created for stories. You were created to worship the one who has slayed the dragon and will have his bride.

Believe it.
Preach it.
Teach it.
Take it.
